The Story of Maria Juarez, Deported from Detroit

Detroit Public Television and Bridge Magazine, partners in the Detroit Journalism Cooperative, joined forces in 2017 to document in powerful detail, through video diaries, the experience of Maria Juarez. The mother from Detroit was deported in May, 2017 – forcing her to leave behind her 18-month-old son and her husband fighting leukemia. The video diaries form a dramatic and powerful document.

Her case is not simple – born in Mexico, she arrived in Detroit before she was a year old, and as a teen was convicted twice of felony car-theft.

The video diaries begin 21 days before she must report for removal to Mexico: http://www.dptv.org/one-detroit/21-days-to-exile/
